Whether you’re visitingMadeiraBeachduring the month of October or live here year round, the John’s Pass Ghost Tour is the perfect way to kick off the month of October, and celebrate Halloween!
Featuring a candlelit walking tour through historic John’sPassVillage, you’ll hear tales of buried treasure, tragedies, and modern day hauntings that have shaped the community ofMadeiraBeach.
The tour begins at Hubbard’sMarina, which is where the quaint fishingvillageofJohn’s Pass originated and where the city ofMadeiraBeachbegan. Hear the tales of how John’s Pass andTreasure Islandwere shaped by a great hurricane, and the buried treasure of pirate John Levique that was never recovered.
Tours begin every night at 8 pm from the Hubbard’s Marina Information Booth and last approximately 70-90 minutes. The cost is $15 per person and $8 for children ages 4-12. Tour-takers are advised to wear comfortable walking shoes, sneakers preferably, as this is walking tour.
The tour is suitable for children. In fact it’s more fun when the whole family takes part in it! Tour guides all wear costumes as they tell tales of lost love, betrayal, and heartbreak, and always incorporate historical perspective so you can learn about the people and events that shaped the area.
The thing that separates these ghost tours from the zombies and gremlins and ghosts you see at Hall-o-Scream and Halloween Horror Nights is that these stories are all taken from actual personal accounts documented over the years by local historians and the general public.
TheTampaBayarea has a rich history of ghost encounters. From the historic Don Cesar Hotel on St. Pete Beach which was frequented by presidents, to St. Petersburg’s Haslam’s Bookstore inhibited by old “Wacky Jack”, to Jungle Prada, featuring ancient Native American burial grounds and the old Gangplank Nightclub where Al Capone used to hang out. Other popular spots you can see on these ghost tours include the Gulfport Casino, Old Tampa Theater, the Detroit Hotel in downtownSt. Petersburg, and the old Hotel Cordova.
Those wishing to take a tour should call ahead to make reservations, or go online to the Ghost Tours website. The month of October is a very busy month for Ghost Tours, but the changing weather and the added “spook” factor of Halloween should make for a very fun time, especially if you’re visiting the Madeira Beach area and looking for something fun to do that’s within walking distance of the area’s hotels and vacation rentals.
